Weekend risteilijä/kryssare

Weekend-risteilijän nimi viittaa vapaa-ajan purjehdukseen ja siihen tarkoitukseen vene syntyikin sodan jälkeen. Tarve saada matkapurjehdukseen kelpoisen vene, jossa yöpyminen ja ruuanlaitto kunnollisissa tiloissa on mahdollista, johti turkulaisen Arne Wiklundin suunnittelemaan lähinnä itselleen sopivan veneen. Venetyypin nimi juontui sekä Wiklundin omasta nimestä että weekend´istä. Useimmiten veneiden nimetkin on valittu W-alkuisiksi. Ilmeisesti 16 W-venettä on rakennettu ja suuri osa niistä purjehtii edelleen.

The name of Weekend-kryssare creates a vision of sailing without any timetable between islands – and in fact this was reason why Weekend boat was developed in 1940´s. The designer was Arne Wiklund, not professional boat designer but a keen sailor. He wanted to get a cruising boat with cabin, overnight possibilities and a pentry. The name of the boat is based on his own familyname (with W) and word weekend. Names of the boats followed the track – most of them begin with the letter W. Evidently 16 W-boats were built, and most of them are still sailing.
